Hand-and-foot point care
Hand-and-foot point care uses points on the hands, feet, wrists and ankles. We needle lightly or press, and we give you a map so you know what we did and where.
A hand-and-foot visit, in order
Who usually comes for it
People who would rather stay fully dressed, who are uneasy about needles near a sore area, or who want something to do at home between visits. Others come because a hand, wrist or foot feels stiff or cold. Acupuncture is one option, and results vary.
What a visit is like
We talk and read your pulse at both wrists
We choose points on your hands or feet and show you the map
We place fine needles, or use gentle pressure if you prefer
You rest for about 25 minutes
You take the map home, with any points to press yourself
What you may feel afterward
You may feel a brief tingle or tenderness in the hand or foot, and most people feel relaxed. A small bruise is possible. You can use your hands as usual afterward.
Tell us first
Please tell us before any treatment if:
You are pregnant or might be
You take a blood thinner or have a bleeding disorder
You have had lymph nodes removed on one side
Needles worry you: we go slowly, or use pressure instead
Your hands or feet are numb, for example from diabetes: we go carefully
How many visits people plan for
We suggest a plan at your first visit and review it each time. It is our plan, not a promise, and pressing points at home is optional.
What it doesn't do, and when to see a doctor
It doesn't replace care for an injury, or for numbness that is new or spreading. See a doctor first for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, a high fever, a new lump, or pain after a fall or an accident. For an emergency, call 911. Acupuncture works alongside your doctor's care and never replaces it.
