Herbal decoctions
A decoction, called tang in Korean, is a tea made by simmering herbs slowly in water and straining them. We choose each formula for you after we ask about your medicines, and we give you a printed list of everything in it.
Hanyak
Bring us a list of everything you take
Herbs can interact with medicines, so we check before we recommend any herb. Bring us a list of everything you take: prescriptions, vitamins, teas and other herbs.

We go over your list before we choose a formula
Every formula comes with a printed list of its ingredients
We tell you what a formula costs before you take it home
Tell your prescriber about the herbs you take, too

An herb visit, in order
Who usually comes for it
People who want to add herbs to their acupuncture visits, or who grew up with hanyak at home and want to keep it up. Herbs are always optional, and many patients never take them.
What a visit is like
We ask about everything you take
We choose a formula and explain each ingredient
You take it home as a tea, or as dried herbs to simmer
We check in at your next visit and adjust
What you may feel afterward
Some people notice an upset stomach or loose stools at first. Tell us and we adjust the formula. If you get a rash, swelling or trouble breathing, stop and get medical care right away.
Tell us first
Please tell us before any treatment if:
You are pregnant, nursing or might be
You take a blood thinner or any prescription
You have a liver or kidney condition
You are allergic to any plant or food
You have surgery planned
How many visits people plan for
A formula is usually taken for a short course, and we review it at each visit. It is our plan, not a promise.
What it doesn't do, and when to see a doctor
Herbs don't replace your medicines or your doctor's advice, and we never ask you to change a medicine. See a doctor first for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, a high fever, a new lump, or pain after a fall or an accident. For an emergency, call 911. Acupuncture works alongside your doctor's care and never replaces it.
Thinking about herbs?
How fees work has its own page, and we put the fee for your visit in writing before we begin.
